It has come to our notice via Outdoor Swimmer Magazine at https://outdoorswimmer.com/news/outdoor-swimming-venues-to-close-despite-calls-for-lockdown-exemption, that a question was raised in Parliament on Monday evening, requesting Government permission for outdoor swimming venues to remain open during the period of national Covid restrictions starting on Thursday 05/11/2020.
There had been calls for outdoor swimming venues, along with other outdoor leisure activities such as golf and tennis, to be granted an exemption under the restrictions, but any hopes of this were rejected by the Prime Minister.
Outdoor Swimmer reports that Boris Johnson confirmed that all leisure facilities, including outdoor swimming pools and other venues, will be forced to close from Thursday when new lockdown measures come into force.
We, together with other operators of swimming venues, feel this is contrary to the Government’s published statement that making a short journey from home in your local area to exercise outdoors, or to visit an outdoor public place, are 2 specific reasons why people can leave home.
We are convinced that with more people on furlough during these restrictions, it is important that everyone should maintain their physical & mental health by swimming in healthy & stress-relieving open water, staying healthy, and thereby reducing the loading on the NHS of more sick patients.
We were the first National swimming lake to open on 13 May 2020 with a robust Covid-Secure procedure which was featured on radio & TV by the BBC. Since then thousands of our swimmers have willingly embraced that Covid-Secure procedure without a single Covid reported case. During that time our robust procedures were examined & approved by the HSE.
So we are very sorry & frustrated to be forced to close Dosthill Quarry until these Government restrictions on outdoor swimming are relaxed or further clarified by the Government.
If you have booked on a swim pass we will delete those bookings so you don’t lose a swim. If you have booked and paid for a single swim, we will freeze that booking to protect your payment, so you can email a new date & time to me at firstname.lastname@example.org when restrictions are lifted, at which time the normal bookings page and availability chart will be reactivated.
